Only on Tumblr can you make a statement like ‘veganism is white supremacy’ without any sort of qualification and be feted as a wise sage. Like, yes, let’s discuss the exploitation of immigrants and all these other issues that are part of the system that brings food to our tables but these provocative statements are just so so so useless. (I’m also really bored of white ppl tagging random things as white supremacy a la akagoldfish talking about otherkin, because that cheapens the term, but that is another topic)

I’m confused, are these people under the impression that slaughterhouses aren’t staffed by exploited immigrant labor too?  are they somehow convinced that over 99% of meat in the US isn’t fed many times its weight in vegan food before it’s slaughtered?  if one vegan meal has, say, 5 “white supremacy points” then a comparable portion of meat has between 25 and 50, since its production rests on consuming the same resources but consumes 5-10X more, with added labor exploitation at every stage.

the idea that because you can find flaws in vegan ethics their critique of omnivory is somehow invalid is fucking idiotic.  yeah, that tomato was likely picked by a migrant worker.  is your meat-eating ass not eating tomatoes?  do you think a Tyson plant is any healthier, safer, or better paying than a tomato field?  for every single unit of soy that goes into tofu, 9.3 goes in the same weight of beaf, so even if there are bunny rabbits being run over by combines, vegans are killing 86% less of them.

are they really that fucking dense, or are they just being self-indulgent?

No, there are real conversations that understand the problems with meat production without engaging the white-washing colonial rhetoric of self-righteous xvx vegans. Veganism in itself is not white supremacy, of course not. But the popular purveyors of moral veganism tend more often than not to be basic bitches.

(The whole thing about immigrants is related to, I feel, what people like Tommy xvx have given unqualified statements on: that immigrant exploitation would disappear with veganism, which is glaringly false. The point is not that meat-eaters don’t exploit immigrants, but that pop edge vegans give less than 2 fucks about humans when it comes to saving chickens.)

popular purveyors of moral anything tend to be obnoxious assholes.  nearly every major ethical philosophy can trace its roots back to someone who was exiled or killed for generally being a douche to the people around him.

And I’ve heard the “you care more about animals than people” thing much, much more often than I’ve actually encountered it in the veg*n community.  Yes, PETA has been sexist, and that’s not ok, but their veganism is definitely not causing them to be more sexist than society as a whole.  dismissing the ethical philosophy of an entire group because some of them are in violation of a (debatably) separate-but-complementary moral code is essentially an ad-hominem fallacy.  their personal failings have no bearing on the integrity of their argument.

and I’ve also heard, on a regular basis, accusations with a similar structure leveled at Americans who care about foreigners, and even people who help neighbors instead of focusing all their resources on their own family or church.  when someone within your group advocates the moral significant of “aliens”, the natural response is to take it as a personal threat and to accuse the advocate of favoring outsiders at the expense of the group.

we’ve inherited a tendency to think of dignity and moral significance as a zero-sum game, and that’s just not true.
